Sulphuric acid is dibasic Essay Example

Sulphuric acid is dibasic Paper Demonstrating that sulphuric is dibasic: Aim: The aim of my plan is to demonstrate that sulphuric acid is dibasic. Introduction: Acid is a substance that reacts with a base to form a salt and water similarly a base is a substance that reacts with an acid to form a salt and water. Lewis (a scientist) states that an acid is a compound that accepts a pair of electrons from a base and a base is a molecule or an ion that donates a pair of electrons to an acid. Acids taste sour and are corrosive and bases are slippery. ? Acid + Base i Salt + Water Acid + Metal i Metal Salt + Hydrogen gas Prediction: I predict that sulphuric acid, H2SO4 is dibasic because it forms two hydrogen (H+) ions in an aqueous solution. It is the molecule of sulphuric acid which changes to sulphate ions (SO42-) and hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. However, hydrochloric acid is monobasic as it only forms one hydrogen (H+) ion in an aqueous solution. To prove this, I am going to carry out two different experiments that involve a titration and collection of a gas. I assume that it should require me half a volume of sulphuric acid to neutralise sodium hydroxide, NaOH than HCl in titration. To prevent irritant substances from coming in contact with my skin Method: Titration: 1. Pour in 100cm3of sulphuric acid and 100cm3of Sodium hydroxide in two separate beakers and label them with their corresponding names, H2SO4 and NaOH. 2. Rinse burette first with distilled water then with small amount of H2SO4 while tap is still closed. Leave some of the acid and run it through the tap. 3. Close the tap and clamp the burette. Make sure it is secure. 4. Using filter funnel, fill burette with H2SO4. 5. Also, rinse conical flask with distilled water first and then with NaOH. 6. Bind pipette filler with pipette and fill in 25 cm3 of NaOH and read lower meniscus. 7. Hold pipette above conical flask and remove the pipette filler which will allow NaOH to run down into it. 8. Put a whit tile underneath burette. 9. Add few drops of phenolphthalein in the conical flask containing NaOH and place it on the tile. 10. Open the tap fully and allow the acid to flow and at the same time swirl the conical flask. 11. If the colour of solution is going lighter, twist the tap so that only drops of acid flow into the conical flask. 12. Keep adding the drops until one last drop changes the colour of the solution to colourless. 13. Close the tap with that last drop and record the reading of the acid that was used in a table. 14. Repeat the same procedure 3 more times and find the average volume of acid used. 15. Carry out exactly the same procedure from step 1 to 13 but using HCl instead of H2SO4. 16. See the figure below for how to set up the apparatus.

ADHD essays

ADD/ADHD essays Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a medical condition, caused by genetic factors that result in certain neurological differences" (The ADHD Information Library). Even at 5% each classroom in America will have one or 2 ADHD kids in the class (ADHD Kids), or it can affect older people and makes life hard for these people to concentrate on even the simplest things. There are medications out there to help these people, along with different types of therapy. Even with the medication and therapy ADD/ADHD makes life very difficult for these people. People with ADD suffer from overload; they have a heightened awareness of incoming environmental stimuli. Their world tends to be too bright, too loud, too abrasive and too rapidly changing for comfort. (ADHD Kids). This means ADD/ADHD makes it hard to ignore things making them easily distracted by the smallest things. They often suffer from Making careless mistakes in schoolwork, difficulty sustaining attention to tasks, not listening to what is being said, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, losing and misplacing belongings, fidgeting and squirming while seated, talking excessively, interrupting or intruding on others, and difficulty playing quietly. There are many other complications that ADD/ADHD causes for people, such as disorientation to time and space is often a problem. Measures to Neutralize the Consequences of the Hurricane Katrina Research Paper - 1

Measures to Neutralize the Consequences of the Hurricane Katrina - Research Paper Example Like all disasters, Katrina placed doctors, nurses and other professionals who were in a capacity to respond to the situation in a rather precarious situation where they had to choose between fleeing and saving their families as well as themselves and staying to assist with the rescue mission and caring for the victims. By staying, they risked more than injury or death. The government authorized the use of winter gasoline to cater to the shortage of fuel. It lifted restrictions on boutique fuel requirements that opened the American market to foreign refineries that did not meet EPA requirements. The response averted a much worse situation of widespread shortage of fuel which undoubtedly would have had a harder impact on the economy (Foundation for Teaching Economics.com, 2015). There was the unprofessional handling of the situation by the authorities (Moynihan, 2009), in particular, the time it took for Federal Emergency Management Agency to set up operations in New Orleans, who furth ermore did not seem to have a reliable plan of action (HISTORY.com, 2015). The problem was viewed as administrative as the head of the agency at that time had no prior experience of crisis management or disaster relief. The case study by Hori & Schafer shows how the Hurricane Katrina led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Louisiana citizens (2010). The displaced citizens lost their jobs and suffered from income declines and numerous diseases. The study by Weaver & Vozikis shows how the national and state government sought to mitigate businesses from the effects of the Hurricanes Katrina through bridge loans offered by the state  of  Louisiana Bridge Loan Program (2010). The manner in which the government responded to the disaster has been faulted by several analysts, they all agree upon the fact that the response should have been quicker and more organized.   However the International Risk Governance Council agrees that the hurricane was no routine emergency, it presented a unique problem that required unorthodox decision-making skills (Moynihan, 2009).

Effective Teaching Essay Example for Free

Effective Teaching Essay One of the professions that could be interesting on one side yet challenging on the other side is the teaching profession. Many people see teaching as an enterprise where people who are knowledgeable in a field of study transmit what they know to others who know little about that field of study. Generally, this is a misconception as this limits teaching to the content and does not consider actual learning. In the real sense, teaching is all encompassing as it deals with what is being taught, how it is being taught and the entire process of knowledge acquisition. As a teacher or an instructor, one must apply the right methods in disseminating information. There are different instructional methods that work for different set of people. Personally, I would not say that one is better than the other because I believe that all these instructional methods work, depending on the targeted students/participants and how the instructor or teacher can effectively use them. To speak on the whole, teaching is about imparting knowledge or skill and no matter the instructional method you use, the most important thing is that knowledge is being passed across the right way. Therefore, as an instructor, one must understand the student’s need and identify/develop specific methods in order to create an atmosphere that is conducive for learning and that allows the impartation of knowledge and skill. In my years of teaching and instructing, I have come to discover some methods that have worked for me. I have come to identify these instructional methods as vital and thus applied it in my style of teaching. As a teacher, I have come to identify withy these principles as effective and vital to the teaching profession. Although there are many principles that I have incorporated in my style of teaching, I would discuss the ones that I consider the most vital in the following paragraphs. Personally, I am of the notion that effective teaching should take a student centered approach where focus shifts from the instructor to the student. In my classes, I create an atmosphere where the students feel at home and are more involved in the learning process. I have discovered that this helps in the building of their cognitive abilities. I make sure that I do not present myself as the boss in the class, rather I encourage them to participate and allow them make decisions on the pace we go and what is studied. Topics that are treated in class are chosen according to the student’s needs and perceptions. I have monitored the effect that this has on the overall learning process and I have discovered that the students develop better problem solving skills. Furthermore, as a follow-up to the above method, I ensure that students participate more in the learning process. I am able to achieve this by seeking for their opinion about a topic in the start of each class. Apart from this, sometimes I initiate a debate in the class and play the role of an umpire as I hear their opinions. I then pick out relevant points from what they have said and use it as a starting point in introducing the topic to the class. I stipulate it in the class syllabus that class participation will be graded at the end of the course and this will add up to the points. In addition to this, I sometimes break the students into small groups and organize a mini class competition. This has worked greatly as it gives me an insight into their idea about the topic and thus I can be able to correct their misconceptions based on what I have heard them say. This encourages collaborative and group learning and this creates a warm atmosphere in the class. Another thing I do in my class is that I build a sense of curiosity in the students. This gives them the desire to learn more and look forward to what would be taught in the next class. At the end of each class, I give rhetorical questions that are open ended in nature, such that it builds suspense in them and makes them want to know the answers to the questions I give. I also ask them thought provoking questions and sometimes make a captivating statement about what will be introduced in the next class As a teacher, I have recognized that fact that there are different types of students. Some are naturally want to learn and are always ready to explore new possibilities. However, as this is true of some students, some other students are passive learners. When I spot this, a method I use is supporting these types of students to leave their comfort zones and create new possibilities for themselves. I achieve this by guiding their thoughts and making them participate in class. Some students are rather timid because they are scared of contributing the wrong thing in class. This makes them stay in their comfort zones and they seldom participate in class. In such a case I strive to build the confidence of such students and aid them in their thinking process by providing clues for them to hit the right ideas. This method helps them to develop confidence in themselves and come out of their shells to participate in class. In my years of teaching, I have seen students who are timid transform to become major contributors in class. Finally, I have discovered that learning requires a settled mind. Therefore I make sure that I do not becloud the students only with academic work. I make sure that I teach these students how to be successful in life as well as in school. I make them know that I am concerned about them and their welfare but I do not involve myself directly in their affairs. I always give my students a listening ear and operate an open door policy where they can relate better with me. Summarily, teaching could be challenging but there is a joy that comes from the fact that I am imparting knowledge to them. The fulfillment of a teacher or an instructor is exemplified in the good performance of his/her students. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my students perform well and develop mastery in the topics which I have taught them. Reference: Edwards, R. (2001). â€Å"Meeting individual learner needs: power, subject, subjection†. In C. Paechter, M. Preedy, D. Scott, and J. Soler (Eds. ), Knowledge, Power and Learning. London: SAGE.

Ralph is the Best Leader in Lord of the Flies Essay -- essays research

Who is the Better Leader? In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued. While the boys are under Jack's control, they quickly went back into how they started when they first got there. However, Ralph was able to keep the boys under control by holding meetings. At the meetings, a sense of order is instilled because the boys are not allowed to speak unless they have the conch shell. "I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking." (p. 31) By making this rule, he gains respect from the boys and becomes for confident as a leader. Ralph uses his power to tries to make the boys better people. He shows his by building them shelters. "They talk and scream. The littuns. Even some of the others." (p. 53) Ralph is saying that the boys need the shelters because they are afraid and the shelters will help the boys feel more secure. This shows he has better knowledge of people making him a better leader than Jack who does not understand this. Jack does not realize that the boys need to feel secure and need someone in control. Ralph shows what the boys need by the way he handles the then. Jack considers the boys lower to him, meanwhile, Ralph treats... ... Ralph has proven to have a much better understanding of people and their needs and this makes him a much better leader than Jack. With Ralph's understanding of the need for order and rules, he improves the condition where the boys are living in. Jack's condition was horrible. Also, Jack treated the boys very badly and like he better. Ralph, on the other hand treated the boys all equally and with respect. Ralph's priority to get off the island shows his wisdom and ability to make good decisions. Although Jack was popular on the island for the short amount of time the boys were there, he would not have been popular for much longer. He does not have any of the qualities that a good leader should have and turned himself and the rest of the boys into complete losers. Jack's plan would have soon faded but if Ralph had become leader, his wisdom would last much longer.

Changes in Immigration at Canada on 20th Century

Immigration has had a strong effect on Canada’s historical development, from countryside in the early part of the 20th century to the building of Canada’s largest cities. Immigration itself has changed greatly during the 19th and 20th centuries and continues to do so. During the first sixty years of the 20th century, the majority of immigrants to Canada came either from Europe or the United States. This has since changed much with entry based on a points system and the introduction of human’s benefit. At present Canada is known as a country with a wide immigration policy which is reflected in Canada's variety of races of mankind. According to the 2001 survey by  Statistics Canada, Canada has 34 national groups with at least one hundred thousand members each, of which 10 have over 1,000,000 people and numerous others represented in smaller amounts. 13. % of the population belonged to  visible minorities: most numerous among these are  Chinese  (3. 5% of the population),  South Asian  (3. 1%),  Black  (2. 2%), and  Filipino  (1. 0%). In 2004, Canada received 235,824 immigrants. The top ten sending countries, by state of origin, were Peoples Republic of China  (37,280),  India  (28,183),  Philippines  (13,900), Pakistan  (13,011),  Iran (6,491),  United States  (6,470),  Romania  (5,816),  United Kingdom (5,353), South Korea  (5,351), and  Colombia  (4,600).By 2006, the most numbered of immigrants coming to Canada originated in Asia, most especially in China and India. Immigration has been, and continues to be, a very important source of population growth in Canada. Given the ageing of the Canadian population and the gradual lessening birth rate, research shows that immigration could be the largest provider to population growth in the future. Therefore, it would not be amazing if Canada one day is the best country in the world economically, socially and culturally if immigration keeps on happenin g regularly. Combining different cultures in the world is a very big achievement because not many countries are successful in maintaining their cultural mixture and keeping peace at the same time is a tough challenge for any country. http://www. worldlingo. com/ma/enwiki/en/Immigration_to_Canada http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Immigration_to_Canada
